November 18, 2010 - Dropping Anchor at Rasa Island

By: Arturo Valdez

9:40 AM - We conducted a symposium at the local La Salle-run high school about the rationale of the Voyage of the Balangay. Rene Sinco, Foundation Director of Rio Tuba Nickel Corporation, ensured that our needs and re-supplies are taken care of. Rio Tuba is our first
well-organized welcome and for most of the crew, had set their first step on Philippine soil since we left Taganak Island for Sandakan, Sabah.

Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation gave Team Balangay our first well-organized welcome since we returned to the Philippines. Only a few crew members disembarked in Balabac Island to pay a courtesy call on the Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard units stationed in the island. The balangays anchored in a cove but did not get to dock in Balabac in the absence of a port. Most of the crew members set foot on Philippine soil again in Rio Tuba.

11:48 AM - We are now cruising towards Rasa Island near Narra town. Pastor reported that everything is set for our arrival in Puerto Princesa.

Earlier this morning, a breath-taking photo and video shoot of the Balangay flotilla sailing along Rio Tuba was taken by Andy Maluche and Minda Ponce riding the corporation's private plane. We will have this shown later in our Voyage website and FaceBook page.

10:00 PM - We dropped anchor at Rasa Island just across Tando in mainland Palawan to spend the night here. Before reaching a safe place to anchor, we again got drenched by heavy downpour plus gusty winds but only lasted for 30 minutes. We will be up early tomorrow and depart at 6:00AM so we can reach Puerto Princesa around 10-11AM.

Pastour had coordinated already with the city government re: our arrival in Puerto Princesa. We were told that a big welcome awaits us.
