November 4, 2010 - Layag Ng Lahi

By: Arturo Valdez

10:39 AM - The biggest impact of the Voyage of the Balangays to our people is to reconnect them with their glorious maritime heritage and reminded them that they can trace their lineage from a proud, regal and daring race, a lesson that Rizal hammered to us in his remark, "ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan, hindi makakarating sa patutungohan."

The majesty of our forefathers should serve as an anchor for the youth to be confident in facing the future.

Our travel in Southeast Asia showed that the great bodies of waters like the South China Sea, Gulf of Thailand, Sulu Sea, Java and Celebes Seas did not divide us but served as our natural highway to unify us as a people before the disruptive power of colonialism splintered us into nation-states. Everywhere, our Southeast Asian brothers were awed by the daringness and bravery of the intrepid Filipino crew to reach their shores riding in the traditional balangay.

The voyage reminded them of what links and unifies us as Southeast Asian people.

Subject: a very simple poem for your great voyage

Good day to all, i was really inspired by your voyage and happy to see you last Saturday at Phil. Embassy and at Mary Help of Christian church last night so I wrote a simple poem today (mula sa puso). Thanks for the knowledge you've shared, since I am a social studies teacher, i will spread the good news to my students. I will pray for your success and
good luck to your team..

Nawa’y pagpalain lahat tayo/kayo
KAYA NG PINOY! Kaya natin ito!!!

Hi Paz,

We, too, are also really inspired knowing that our voyage has rekindled and stirred the sense of pride of our "kababayans" everywhere - motivating them to write a poem like yours, which captures the soul and spirit of the Voyage of the Balangay. You may not be physically aboard with us but your thoughts and verses showed that you are sailing with us.

12:01pm Nov 4: Amidst a storm in the vast ocean, you will finally realize that man is simply a minute speck, a helpless creature at that, crying for deliverance and mercy from God. Below is our latest update after safely making it to Kuching, Sarawak the other day (November 2).
