Samal Island (April 10-11, 2010)

By: Arturo Valdez

April 10, 2010 - 8:00 AM
Departed Digos wharf for Samal Island to cruise leisurely and kill time before the Grand Welcome monday morning, April 12. Wind is northeasterly but monsoon transitional wind can be felt already this morning. Sea is calm but going headwind towards Kaputian, Samal island. We have 10 guest crew in this more settled waters.

April 10, 2010 - 12:45 PM
Balangay arrived at Kaputian Beach at Samal Island from Digos City. The seas was more settled and we docked at the local wharf welcomed by the local PCG, Police and LGU's, There was not much of a fanfare as stop-over is unscheduled (our 63 stops) and we are taking our time for our hectic schedule in Davao City morning of April 12.

In the evening we have a "Boodle Fight" type of dinner together with the crew of PG 388, and guest riders headed by Dale and Pearl Griffin of Digos City.

The Kaputian Beach was filled up by local tourists and I settled on top of "Masawa" for the night to avoid the noise of the whole night of revelers.

But at 1:30AM 11 April, we were awakened by too much shaking of the boat caused by strong winds and big waves. The Balangays were threatened to smash each other because of the gale-force wind. We had to wake up everyone to move the Balangays to a safer shelter adjacent to the public park. By 3PM, we had everything under control and completed our unfinished sleep.

Today April 11, we bought a "kambing" for a "kaldereta" treat for dinner. We are all enjoying this leisurely stop-over in preparation for a grand welcome tomorrow at Davao City. Have been informed already that NAVY SWAG rubber boats will meet us midway between Samal Island and Davao City as part of the flotilla of welcomers.

We will be missing Dr Ted Esguerra who rushed back to PCG HQ in Manila for some urgent business. Dr Ted is from Davao and he will be missing this big treat for the team.
