Lapinig Island Experience (Nov 19, 2009)

By: Arturo Valdez

For the past two stops we failed to meet the Mayor because they all went to Manila to attend the dominant party meeting. Instead Pitogo (Carlos P. Garcia) Vice Mayor Nestor Abad took care of us during our stay at Lapinig Island. While Dr Ted, Pastor, Carina and Janet went around the island to conduct symposia, I worked to update my blogs and pictures for the website. In the evening they came back quite exhausted but still smiling after meeting grade and high school students all over the island.

I remembered that we have been invited and doing the rounds of talk about our Mt Everest experiences before multi-nationals for the past years for a fee. But here, in these isolated islands, far from the frenzy of Metro Manila and major urban centers, we are going out of our way and happier to meet with the young in order to challenge their minds and stir them to be achievers.

Lapinig is typical of those islands in the periphery - gentle, warm and hospitable with traditional values and simple needs – a replica of the “old” Philippines we all loved to talk.
